Store layouts

While it's still odd to me to think of the food industry, as an industry that's set out to make a profit, the idea that stores are laid out the way that they are to increase consumer spending didn't surprise me all too much. When thinking about big supermarkets I've been to in the past, they've all been organized in a way that puts non essential items before essentials. For example, in BJs, the meat, bread, and dairy products are all placed in the back, whilst other items, such as junk food, snacks, and even clothes and electronics are placed at the front where we can easily grab them. However, this only seems to be the case in big chain supermarkets, as the grocery stores close to where I live back home don't follow this trend. While dairy, eggs, etc. seems to always be in the back of the store, I notice that at home, meat, bread, fruits and vegetables tend to be at the very front of the store, even before snacks and unhealthy foods that one might be more likely to grab if they had seen them first. I think this set up has a similar effect, because since the essentials are broken up and placed around the store, consumers are forced to walk through the aisles to get the different things they need, as well as see some things they might not need, but pick up anyway because it's in sight.
