Our attitude towards food

One thing that really struck me in the Kingslover article was when it was mentioned that food often plays a backseat in many of our life decisions. Despite food being a basic necessity, we don't often consciously think about it. Kingslover mentions that when deciding where to live we may consider how far we might be from family and friends, what resources (such as schools and jobs) might be available to us, but never really thinking about what food might be around for us to eat or where it might come from. We often don't stop to think about the real cost of our food, such as how much shipping from one area to another costs, so long as our meals are cheap and readily available. While it's not secret that our society doesn't always pay attention to what we put in our bodies, the article made me aware of how little we truly pay attention to our food, to the point where it almost seems absurd to know when things are in season. It's so odd to think that even though food is part of our every day lives, we spend so little time learning more about its origins.
