Tradional Roles and Freedom

It is interesting to see how men feel more freedom in the culture of foodies than do women. This has to do with men feeling far less pressure to be proficient when it comes to food. Women generally seem to feel that food has to do with taking care of their family whereas men see it more of a space for exploration.

This trend can also be seen in roles that are tradionally masculine. For example, in Chilean society it is expected for men to provide for their wives and family. When choosing a career, men have a lot of external pressure from family, friends, school, etc. and internal pressure to choose high-earning careers. On the other hand, women are encouraged to choose careers in college that are interesting for them, rather than high-earning. In this way women feel much more free to explore.
